Early on Wednesday morning, August 26, 2026, a sudden flood struck the Bhotekoshi River, which flows along the Nepal-Tibet border. Local officials say the flood hit without warning, around 9:15 a.m., giving residents in riverside towns almost no time to escape.

The flood first hit the border towns of Timure and Rasuwagadhi, then rushed downstream through Syabrubesi, a major gateway town for trekkers heading to the Langtang region. From there, the water surged into the Trishuli and Narayani river systems, reaching communities far beyond Rasuwa — including Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Tanahun, Chitwan, and both Nawalparasi districts.

In some places, floodwaters reportedly rose as high as 80 metres above the normal river level — enough force to destroy roads, bridges, homes, and power infrastructure almost instantly.

Unlike an ordinary monsoon flood caused by heavy rain, early assessments suggest this disaster began with an ice-and-rock avalanche high in the mountains on the Tibetan side of the border. The avalanche is believed to have blocked a river, creating a temporary natural dam. When that dam gave way, it released a sudden, violent surge of water and debris downstream — a phenomenon often linked to glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), which are becoming more common as glaciers and mountain permafrost warm.

• The Syafrubesi-Rasuwagadhi road — still under repair from the 2025 flood — was damaged again
